Did you know that Antoine Coysevox’s ‘Mercury Mounted on Pegasus’ was a technical masterpiece in terms of size (such large marble sculptures had never yet been made in France), speed, and skill #RealArt#DidYouKnow

Created in glory of King Louis XIV, the sculpture was completed in barely two years (1701-2), an unparalleled feat of his time. Pegasus (symbol of poetry) is guided by Mercury, the divine messenger and god of trade (symbolising the benefits of the return to peace). Carrara Marble is fragile and can be easily broken by impact, but Coyesvox took the risk of creating frail pieces such as the long, tapering trumpet stem, supported by the figure’s upraised arm.
